OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Oklahoma elementary teachers are using handheld computers to improve their students' reading skills.
Officials say about 11-hundred teachers in 44 districts are using the computers to monitor student performance on reading tests.
The devices allow kindergarten through third-grade teachers to quickly gauge reading skills and determine where students need more help.
Teachers in the past have used paper booklets to track reading skills.
Teachers now read the same text on their handheld computers and tap the screen when a student makes a mistake.
At the end of the reading exercise, the computer calculates a student's score.
