OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- More than 400 Oklahoma National Guard soldiers will be heading to Afghanistan later this year to help in the training of soldiers in the Afghan National Army.
The soldiers are with the First Battalion, 180th Infantry of the 45th Infantry Brigade and will provide security for the trainers and the Afghan soldiers.
Joining the 180th in the deployment will be about 300 soldiers with the Oregon National Guard's 41st Infantry Brigade.
Oklahoma Guard Lieutenant Geoff Legler says the soldiers will go to Camp Shelby, Mississippi, in early March for training and will likely leave for Afghanistan in May or June.
The 180th has armories in Durant, Atoka, McAlester, Edmond, Poteau, Idabel, Sallisaw, Ada, Holdenville and Shawnee.
