Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Bartlesville for an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper.

Trooper Steven Smith died of injuries he suffered in a shooting in 1999. Those injuries forced him to retire. He was 43-years-old.

Smith was a hostage negotiator for the patrol when he responded to a murder scene in Grove. An armed suspect was holding police at bay. During a struggle with the suspect, Smith was shot in the neck, leaving him disabled.

The injuries ultimately resulted in his death.
