HASKELL, Okla. (AP) -- Haskell Town Council members have fired a veteran police officer who's under investigation for alleged inappropriate contact with a teenage girl.
53-year-old Bob Wheeland was dismissed as a result of Wheeland's off-duty meetings with a 14-year-old girl he initially met at the police department.
Muskogee County Sheriff's investigator Tim Brown says deputies also are investigating allegations of sexual assault made by the girl, but Wheeland hasn't been arrested or charged.
Wheeland couldn't be reached for comment Thursday but has denied the allegations.
Town Attorney Gerald -R- Miller says Wheeland admitted to one episode in which he took the teenager to his house alone.
Miller says that action violated the procedures of the town.
Brown says deputies investigated a similar allegation last year involving Wheeland, a teenage girl and sexual assault claims that were unfounded.
