WILBURTON, Okla. (AP) -- Latimer County Sheriff Wayne Brinkley resigns after a year in office.

County officials say Brinkley failed to receive his law enforcement certification, which is required for county sheriffs.

Undersheriff Chris Ford was appointed acting sheriff. A special election for the new sheriff was set for July 25th. Ford says he will seek the office.

Brinkley took office after defeating Melvin Holly in a primary election in July 2004.

Holly was sentenced in November to 25 years in prison on convictions of sexually assaulting female inmates, threatening to kill one victim and obstructing justice by lying to investigators.
