Investigators are searching for answers in the death of an elderly Wagoner County man. 86 year old Sherman Morgan was found dead Sunday along a creek near his apartment in Coweta.
News on 6 anchor Craig Day says Sherman Morgan is being remembered as a good neighbor. A friendly man. Someone always willing to help anyone in need. His death was unexpected.
Coweta Police Lt Donnie Krumsiek: "Shock to the family and a shock to the community. It's not a usual occurrence that we have things like this happen in Coweta. Very unfortunate thing."
Morgan's body was found Sunday morning in a creek bed near his apartment. Officers were called to check on his well being after a neighbor found his door open. "His feet were in that brushy area over there. His head was lying on that log where that plastic bag is. And his mid torso was submerged in that water right there."
Morgan, who was 86, was a Tulsa Police officer during the 1950s and 1960s. Investigators and family members are still trying to determine if anything was taken from the apartment. But police do say, once inside, they noticed a number of things that are out of the ordinary. “There were some broken items in the apartment. There were some pictures knocked off the wall. The bedroom was out of the ordinary. And the front door was open when we arrived. So very uncharacteristic of this gentleman."
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death, along with Coweta Police.
A report from the state medical examiners office could come at any time. That autopsy should determine an exact cause of death.
