NEW YORK (AP) _ The Broadway revival of ``Sweet Charity,'' starring Christina Applegate, will close Dec. 31 after an eight-month run.
The show, which has a score by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields and a book by Neil Simon, will have played 279 performances at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
In its turbulent journey to New York, ``Sweet Charity'' experienced more drama offstage than on. Applegate broke her right foot in March during the show's Chicago tryout. The Broadway production was canceled after its next stop, in Boston, where standby Charlotte d'Amboise took over the role. Yet Applegate came back, and opened the show in New York in May, receiving a Tony nomination for her performance as the lovelorn dance-hall hostess.
``Sweet Charity'' was first done on Broadway in 1966 with Gwen Verdon in the title role. Shirley MacLaine starred in the 1969 film version. Dancer-choreographer Debbie Allen played Charity in the 20th-anniversary Broadway revival in 1986.
