OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Workers at homeless shelters in Oklahoma City and Tulsa are preparing for crowds as cold winter weather makes its way to the state.

Groups that help the homeless say Oklahoma City's homeless population is about 1,500, while an estimated 500 live on the streets in Tulsa.

When temperatures drop below freezing, Salvation Army shelters in Oklahoma City and Tulsa gather extra sleeping mats, cots, blankets and food to serve the increased numbers seeking shelter.
