Pit bull owners across Oklahoma fight possible ban

KELLYVILLE, Okla. (AP) _ Some Oklahoma pit bull owners are fighting a possible law that would require them to spay and neuter their dogs and follow specific fencing requirements.

The law would also ban Oklahoma residents from buying a pit bull from another state.

The law is being called unconstitutional and prejudiced by organizations such as the American Dog Breeders Association and the Endangered Breeds Association.

Representative Paul Wesselhoft began drafting the bill in July after a three-year-old Moore boy lost his arm in an attack by a neighbor's pit bulls.

Attorney General Drew Edmondson issued an opinion saying that state law prohibits cities and towns from banning pit bulls or other specific breeds.

But places like Denver have successfully outlawed the breed with the support of that state's supreme court.

Pit bull owner Ben Scott says the aggressiveness of a dog, despite its breed, can usually be traced back to owners.
