CHICAGO (AP) _ Federal health officials warn that a lot of young people in the U-S are at risk of developing full-blown diabetes.
Researchers from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health have examined data showing about two (m) million adolescents and teenagers have a pre-diabetic condition linked to obesity and inactivity.
It's abnormally high blood sugar levels after several hours without eating. The condition is called impaired fasting glucose, or I-F-G, and is measured in a blood test.
One in 14 boys and girls in a nationally representative sample had the condition. Among overweight adolescents, it was one in six.
The study appears in the November issue of the journal Pediatrics.
