LAWTON, Okla. (AP) At Cameron University in Lawton, soldiers from nearby Fort Sill can receive quick crash courses in Arabic or languages spoken in Afghanistan before being deployed.
Troops heading to Iraq or Afghanistan learn key phrases along with basic recognition of Arabic writing on road signs and buildings.
On campus, Cameron offers an array of courses in more than 50 languages, including many spoken in the Middle East and Africa.
The Arabic workshops are a quick study, generally lasting six or seven hours. Cameron also offers a semester-long Arabic class on the Army post, and is developing workshops in Dari and Pashto, languages spoken in Afghanistan.
