American Indian artist Talmadge Davis dies at 43

The art world is mourning the death of American Indian artist Talmadge Davis. He died Thursday of a heart attack.

Davis was given the title Master Artist by the Five Civilized Tribes Museum. He never formally studied art. His career began when he entered one of his pieces in a state art contest.

He started painting full time in 1998, and he won a number of first place and Best in Show prizes. Just last year, he was awarded the Cherokee Medal of Honor for brining the Cherokee Nation heritage to the mainstream.

Talmadge Davis was 43-years-old.
