OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A state lawmaker says the state needs to find ways to increase the number of insured motorists and cut premiums.

Representative Ron Peterson of Broken Arrow says he's working to develop strategies to identify uninsured motorists and enforce state compulsory insurance laws. Almost one-third of Oklahoma's drivers are currently uninsured.

Peterson -- a former insurance agent -- says uninsured drivers cost everyone in higher insurance premiums and court costs. The problem, he says, is identifying uninsured motorists before they have an accident.

Peterson says the state could identify uninsured motorists through an online verification database. It would take legislation to require insurance companies to comply due to privacy laws.
