OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Officials say a battered sheriff's dog has been released from the vet and is doing fine.
4-year-old German shepherd James Bond was examined for a concussion or brain damage after being repeatedly struck by a hammer-weilding man.
Paul Rector of Oklahoma City is accused of hitting the dog and is being held in jail on complaints of arson and assault and battery.
Officials say that on Thursday morning Rector threw a flaming object at two law officers who had come to arrest him and evict him from his mobile home.
Officials say Rector held authorities at bay for about two hours before being forced out by tear gas. The dog was then released upon him when he refused to drop a knife and hammer.
Officials say Rector hit the dog several times before being subdued.
