OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Voters in McAlester recall a city councilor and replace him with a retired pilot who was making his first run for public office.

Ward 6 councilor Louis Smitherman lost the recall election to Frank "Sam" Mason, who received 56 percent of the vote. Two other candidates also sought the seat.

The recall began when some resident said Smitherman was negligent by allowing former city manager Randy Green to receive nearly $600,000 over several years for unused leave. Green's case is the subject of a federal investigation.
