OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A survey on underage drinking says 65 percent of minors who use alcohol get the illegal booze from friends and relatives.
The survey was unveiled Thursday by the Century Council, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization funded by the country's leading distilled spirits producers.
Attorney General Drew Edmondson said day he found the information shocking, noting that it is a crime to provide alcohol to a minor.
Providing alcohol to someone younger than 21 is a felony, and the penalty is a fine of up to $5,000 and up to five years in jail.
The survey is part of a public awareness campaign that includes public service announcements, buttons and informational cards in English and Spanish that will be distributed in liquor stores.
