While the scorching heat is miserable for most of us, there are others whose smile gets bigger as the temperature rises.
News on 6 anchor Craig Day has more details on days like today, as the sun beats down; the temperatures are stifling and people are miserable, be glad for guys like Jim Forsythe.
Jim and his coworkers make sure stores across the Tulsa metro area have plenty of ice on hand. "Everybody wants their ice and they want it right now." Customer demand is so high; Forsythe and his coworkers keep extra busy. "Anywhere from eight to 14 hours a day. The hotter it is, the longer we have to work each day."
For Jim, a heat wave means long hours. For his employer Glacier Ice, hot weather means cool cash. That's because when the temperature hits 100 degrees, ice sales are up 40 percent. And get this, when it hits 105 degrees, ice sales are up 60 percent.
Each of the company's delivery trucks will make 15 to 20 stops each day. The company produces 30 tons of ice each day. "We have baggers come in every morning and bag. In fact, right now they're working seven days a week to make sure we have ice to take out to our customers."
Even though those customers may often take ice for granted, it's a valuable commodity. One that makes such a brutal heat wave a little easier to take.
