OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The second-oldest captive orangutan in North America died Tuesday morning at the Oklahoma City Zoo.
Zoo officials say Les Tunku died from heart and kidney failure. The Sumatran orangutan was 44.
The animal was put under medical supervision last week because of age-related health problems.
Most orangutans in zoo environments live about 40 years; wild orangutan usually live 35 to 40 years. The zoo's female orangutan is 39 years old.
Les was sent to the Oklahoma City Zoo in 1962, the year he was born. He fathered nine children.
