WASHINGTON, D-C (AP) -- The US Senate Tuesday approved Oklahoma City attorney Jerome Holmes to the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.
The Senate voted 67-to-30 to approve Holmes and make him the first black to serve as a judge on the Tenth Circuit that's based in Denver.
The approval comes despite some opposition because of Holmes' previous writings criticizing affirmative action and questioning whether juries should be racially diverse.
Holmes is a former federal prosecutor in the western district of Oklahoma where he prosecuted public corruption cases and federal civil rights violations and served as anti-terrorism coordinator.
He is currently a member of the prominent Oklahoma City law firm of Crowe and Dunlevy.
