Folks with warrants out in Broken Arrow have a week to "Get Out Of Jail Free."
News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson says Broken Arrow Police have 7,000 active warrants out, for everything from domestic abuse to providing alcohol to minors. Those people get a break if they come in to pay fines, fees and penalties before Saturday.
The files of outstanding warrants fill six drawers at the Broken Arrow Police station. These people are wanted for not showing up for a hearing, or for not paying fines.
Broken Arrow Police Major Mark Irwin says the number of files has been growing for years, with some having up to 15 warrants out for their arrest. Irwin says if folks don't come in this week, they could be brought in by a new "warrants task force". Five or six officers will be set aside to go after people with outstanding warrant, beginning with those who have the most in their files. "In the long run, it's definitely more cost effective for them to turn themselves in. They're not going to be arrested at work, or driving to and from school, or whatever the case may be."
The Broken Arrow Court Clerk's office at 2304 South 1st Place will be open 8 AM to 5 PM through Saturday.
