SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) -- With recent rain and snow across Oklahoma reducing the fire danger in the state the Incident Command Post at Shawnee that has coordinated firefighting efforts has closed.
The Oklahoma Division of Forestry closed the post Friday and will resume normal operations for the spring fire season. Officials say most of the firefighters from 37 states and 22 tribes that have helped fight the fires are now heading home.
A total of 2,815 fires have been reported in Oklahoma since November 1st and 558,383 acres burned.
Hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed and at least two people have died in the fires.
