Many Oklahomans losing their jobs because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis are also losing their health insurance. Not a good time for that.

But there are some options. If you lost your job you are likely eligible to sign up for health insurance on the federal government’s exchange through the Affordable Care Act. But you have to sign up by midnight Tuesday to have coverage on April 1.

“Changes in income allow folks to become eligible for tax credit subsidies that lower the cost of their plan,” explained Brett Casey of HealthMarkets.

He is also recommending all of us review our current plans to make sure telemedicine and coronavirus testing is included.

“Many services have been added in the past week, two weeks, a month, from these major insurance companies and group plans,” said Casey.

He said adding those services are typically inexpensive.

The nonprofit VarietyCare offers another option.

“If for whatever reason they don’t have health insurance we are trying to fill that gap,” explained CEO Lou Carmichael.

Variety care is working though the Oklahoma City County Health Department to screen, test and provide virtual follow up visits to folks who are uninsured.

“I think they feel more comfortable when they are talking to a provider even though it’s going to be telehealth and not in person,” said Carmichael. “At least that gives them the confidence someone is taking care of them and can give them good advice.”

Casey said he and his team are available Tuesday night if anyone needs help. Their services are free to clients. For help from Health Markets, click here.

If you are uninsured and believe you may need coronavirus testing call 405-425-4489 Monday through Friday 8am to 4:30 pm.
