The Batmobile build continues Tulsa Pop Kid’s tradition of pushing for literacy and education by creating large props.

“We thought, ‘If we are already delivering comics, then let’s go ahead and do it in style right,’” Tulsa Pop Kids President Arthur Grenno said.

Grenno said they started construction on the 1989-style Batmobile last July but had to stop due to the pandemic.

Saturday was the day to start up again as volunteers at Trav’s Auto Lab in Broken Arrow pushed the Batmobile back into their garage.

“We have a great community here in Tulsa and a lot of people stepped up to donate different parts,” Grenno said.

Grenno said the Batmobile costs $150,000 to build but believes it’s worth it for the children.

“When we pull up to a school for a book fair, having a Batmobile, it just adds to the ability for the children to dream,” Grenno said.

Most of the work done Saturday involved installing a 5.0 Silverado engine into the Batmobile.

Grenno said there’s no way the project could have be done without the help from the community and volunteers at the shop.
