Inmates at a Los Angeles County jail were caught on camera trying to infect themselves with the Coronavirus by sharing water and a mask.

Surveillance video shows an inmate take a sip from a water bottle and set it down... then pass it to a different inmate who also takes a sip. The LA County Sheriff says within two weeks of the videos being recorded 30 inmates tested positive.

"Somehow there was some mistaken belief among the inmate population that if you tested positive there was a way to force our hand and somehow release more inmates out of our jail environment"

The sheriff's department released more than 5,000 inmates recently to create more physical distancing but they had to meet certain qualifications. Nationwide jails and prisons have become hot spots for the Coronavirus.

More than 25,000 inmates have been infected and about 350 have died.
