ROGERS COUNTY -

An Owasso man is in jail accused of shooting his three-year-old nephew in the stomach.

Deputies say Keven Her told them it was an accident, but they say, it was the result of the man ignoring the first rule of handling a firearm, always assume its loaded.

Deputies say Keven Her let his three-year-old nephew pull the trigger on a 9mm handgun and it just clicked, so they say that’s when Her took the gun, pointed it at the boy, and pulled the trigger himself, but that time, the gun went off.

Deputies say Keven Her called 911 and admitted to deputies he shot his nephew. Documents say Her told investigators he didn’t know the magazine was in the gun when he pulled the trigger.

“We look at a three-year-old boy right now with life-threatening injuries, in the hospital, al as a result at the hands of stupidity,” says Sheriff Scott Walton.

Deputies say the three-year-old boy and his dad were in Owasso from out of state, visiting family.

They say the family went out shooting earlier in the week.

Documents say Her told investigators his nephew wanted to play with his gun, so he let him.

“The uncle has cocked the weapon and allowed the three-year-old to pull the trigger and snap the hammer, dry fire the weapon,” says Walton.

Sheriff Walton says Her told them he grabbed the gun, pointed it at the boy, and pulled the trigger.

They say he told them he didn’t know the magazine was in the gun.

“The tragedy lies with this innocent little three years old who has an idiot for an uncle,” says Walton.

Walton says they aren’t sure if Her was under the influence, but they say they did find 28 grams of marijuana in his room.

He says this isn’t a gun issue, it’s a common-sense issue.

“We are all for all the good guys and gals to have weapons they just need to supply brains with them sometimes,” says Walton.

Deputies tell me the boy has had two surgeries today. As soon as we get an update, we will pass it along.
