A man has died after a trooper-involved shooting on the Will Rogers Turnpike during a traffic stop said Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Troopers said it happened on the Will Rogers Turnpike around 8:50 a.m. troopers said Robert D'Lon Harris was shot by a trooper and taken to a hospital in serious condition, where he later died from his injuries.

OHP said the shooting happened after a brief encounter with Harris when the trooper asked him to exit the passenger side of the vehicle.

OHP said there was not a pursuit involved and the investigation is ongoing.

Captain Paul Timmons of OHP said, "right now, we're processing the crime scene, collecting information, talking to any witnesses that may have seen what happened and getting statements. We’re going to conduct the investigation as we always do. It’s going to be a thorough investigation and once the investigation is completed, it’s going to be turned over to the district attorney’s office.”

Timmons addressed the danger of traffic stops.

"Anytime you stop a vehicle, you put yourself at risk. A lot of times, a traffic stop goes really smoothly. Every now and then, something like this occurs, so you just never know. You have to be prepared for whatever happens during that traffic stop," said Timmons.

OHP said this is an ongoing investigation.
