People in Collinsville are upset after a sign honoring veterans was stolen.

The sign recognized the city’s Purple Heart distinction.

A city employee said the community prides itself on its veterans, from the Veterans Community Center to the memorial statues on Main Street.

“We are a city that comes together for our veterans,” said city worker Sherry Campbell. “It’s kind of disheartening to think somebody would take a sign honoring the men and women who fought for those freedoms and have paid the price for us to enjoy those freedoms.”

Campbell said this could be a teaching moment for the thieves.

“I hope they learn and understand what sacrifices have been made by our men and women, our veterans, who have sacrificed so much so that they have the freedoms they enjoy,” said Campbell.

If you have any information about the stolen sign, you’re asked to contact Collinsville police. The number is (918) 371-1000.
