State's Top Swimmers Take First Dip In The Pool In Nearly 3 Months

Swimming, just like any other sport, has felt the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Midwest’s first post-quarantine duel meet took place Saturday at the Trident Aquatic Club in Owasso. An event like this would normally bring in around 500 swimmers. There were about 30 on Saturday.

“Being out of competition for three or four months now, it’s a relief,” swimmer Jack Callan said. “Even though it’s a really small meet, it’s a huge relief to get to compete again.”

Swimming runs in the Callan family. His brother, Patrick, competes for the University of Michigan’s swimming and diving program.

Callan’s father was himself a Wolverine.  

“I love being in the water,” Callan said. “It’s a sport you can do your whole life. You don't have to worry about getting hurt and then your career is suddenly over. It’s a lot harder to get hurt in swimming. That’s another thing that drove me towards it."

Whatever happens along the way, Callan said he will always be around the water.

“Hopefully, I’ll start coaching after my swim career,” Callan said.
