Face masks will be required during Mass and church gatherings in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Archbishop Paul Coakley announced in a letter.

In a "Letter to the Faithful," Coakley said he is requiring masks (shields or face coverings) be worn by all priests, deacons, parishioners, church staff, volunteers and anyone serving in ministry at public Masses, parish events and gatherings, and in parish offices starting Saturday, July 11.

The precaution applies to anyone ages 6 and older.

The precaution is temporary and in response to the rapid number of new COVID-19 cases in Oklahoma.

"To keep our parishioners and our priests safe, we must continue to be vigilant in our efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our parish communities," Coakley said in the letter.
