While much of the nation is pushing for racial equality, one issue that is now taking center stage is bail reform.
In the past weeks and months, we've seen several protesters arrested. Many of them are kept in custody until trial, with bail set at hundreds even thousands of dollars. Now, there's a surge of people donating to bail them out. The donations are also going towards the bail reform movement.
Bail reform advocates argue defendants shouldn't be forced to stay in jail simply because they don't have enough money but many argue bail reform puts criminals back on the streets. New York Eliminated cash bail for misdemeanors and non-violent crimes in April which the NYPD blames for a rise in violence.
California, Nevada, and New Jersey are just a few states that have now passed new bail reform laws.
