Owasso Public Schools won't require masks for temperature checks for students and staff this next school year.

The school district said their plan is to give parents an option of in-person class or online. Some parents like that, and others said it's irresponsible.

"Our goal is to say, school will be in session, but also have those options online," said Superintendent Amy Fichtner.

Fichtner said their plan for next year is to let parents have a choice.

If parents choose to let their kids back in the classroom, their children won't have to wear masks in schools or busses. Masks are recommended, and there won't be daily temperature checks.

Parents are being asked to do a health self-check list with their kids every day. There is also a pivot-to-home plan which will go in place if the schools have to close due to COVID-19.

"We're planning not to stop school, but we will be ready if we need to," Fichtner said.

Brandon Shreffler, who has two kids in the district, said he likes that the plan is a compromise and a choice.

"Parents deserve a choice to make a decision on what's best for their family and kids," Shreffler said.

Heath Vogt, a dad to two students, said he wishes the school district would reconsider because he is worried about the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases.

"It's the top priority of the school to provide a safe spot for the children and I think Owasso is failing that by not requiring masks and temperature screenings," Vogt said.

Fichtner said plan is still likely to change and parents should be ready to adapt.

Parents have a few weeks to decide between online and in person classes.
