Mysterious package of seeds from have been arriving in Oklahoma, leading state and federal officials to investigate.
Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry officials said the seeds are coming in small packages from China, labeled as if they had jewelry or other small objects inside.
“They did not order. They were completely unsolicited,” said Oklahoma Department of Agriculture spokesperson Morgan Vance.
According to Vance, Oklahomans aren’t the only unsuspecting recipients of the seeds.
“There have been reports of multiple states that have been impacted by similar packages,” Vance said.
While the seeds are still shrouded in mystery, the Department of Agriculture wants to make sure they aren’t an invasive species.
“Our goal is to make sure that all agriculture products come from America, that we know where what those seeds are; we know what we’re putting in our soil, and that it’s not tainted with any kind of invasive species or pests or chemical,” Vance said.
Anyone who receives a package like this is instructed to keep it sealed.
The Department of Agriculture advises you not to throw the package away.
According to Vance, recipients should first call the USDA to make a report at 800-877-3835.
The USDA email is SITC.Mail@aphis.usda.gov.
After reporting to the federal government, the state government asks you email them at organ.vance@ag.ok.gov or Kenny.naylor@ag.ok.gov.
