Former presidential candidate Herman Cain died Thursday at the age of 74.

The news was reported on HermanCain.com and was posted on his official Twitter page.

"Herman Cain – our boss, our friend, like a father to so many of us – has passed away," Dan Calabrese wrote.

Cain was hospitalized with COVID-19 and placed on oxygen at an Atlanta hospital.

"Let me deal with some of the particulars of the last few weeks. We knew when he was first hospitalized with COVID-19 that this was going to be a rough fight. He had trouble breathing and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. We all prayed that the initial meds they gave him would get his breathing back to normal, but it became clear pretty quickly that he was in for a battle," Calabrese wrote.

The Cain team received encouraging news from doctors five days ago. The post said doctors thought he would eventually recover but it wouldn't be quick.

"We were relieved to be told that, and passed on the news via Herman’s social media. And yet we also felt real concern about the fact that he never quite seemed to get to the point where the doctors could advance him to the recovery phase," Calabrese wrote.

Cain's last public appearance was when he went to President Donald Trump's Tulsa rally as a representative for the campaign.

Cain, a former Godfather's Pizza CEO, survived stage 4 colon cancer, which was diagnosed in 2006.

He ran for president as a Republican in several election cycles but became most well-known during the 2012 campaign while riding the wave of Tea Party popularity.
