Former Vice President Joe Biden has picked Sen. Kamala Harris as his 2020 running mate.

The presumptive Democratic nominee made the announcement Tuesday, less than a week away from the virtual Democratic National Convention.

The Biden campaign texted the choice to supporters before formally announcing on the campaign's website.

Harris, 55, is a U.S. senator from California since 2017. She was born in Oakland, California, and was the 32nd attorney general of California.

Harris is the second Black American woman and first South Asian American to serve in the U.S. Senate.

She ran in the crowded 2020 Democratic primary and butted heads with Biden during debates.

Harris withdrew her presidential bid in Dec. 2019, citing a shortage of funds. As a senator, she would also be called back to Capitol Hill to hear arguments in the impeachment trial against President Donald Trump, which happened in January.

In March, Harris endorsed Biden for president after he won several states during the Super Tuesday contests.

Harris is the third woman and first Black woman to be selected as a vice presidential running mate. Geraldine Ferraro was selected in 1984 by Democratic candidate Walter Mondale and Sarah Palin was picked by Republican John McCain in 2008.
