Census Workers Go Door-To-Door As Deadline Closes In

Census workers in northeastern Oklahoma will begin going door to door this week to collect information from those who haven’t filled out the census yet.

Last week the deadline to collect that information was moved from October 31 to September 31, which is one month less to collect data to complete the 2020 census.

Typically the deadline to collect information for the census is July 31, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, that deadline was pushed to October 31.

If you haven’t filled out your household’s information yet, you can do so over the phone, by mail, or online at 2020census.gov.

Director of the Census Information Center of Oklahoma Melanie Poulter says starting the week if August 10, workers in masks with an official badge will begin knocking on doors in northeastern Oklahoma and portions of southern Oklahoma to collect information so that the Sooner State is accurately represented.

“Time is getting short, there will be less opportunity to talk to those who have not yet responded and unfortunately the people who are most likely to be under counted are those more marginalized populations,” Poulter says.

The collected information will be combed through and turned in by December 31st to be released as the new official data for deciding on funding for various projects and programs across the country.
