Bixby Public Schools has suspended a high school teacher after he was arrested for allegations of inappropriate conduct.
Investigators said they hope Jason Byrd is charged with video voyeurism.
Muscogee Creek Nation Lighthorse Police said they arrested Byrd because he's Cherokee and the crime happened on Creek land, based on the Supreme Court McGirt ruling on tribal jurisdiction.
Bixby Schools said Jason Byrd was a math teacher at the high school for the last 12 years. We've also learned that Byrd was a youth baseball coach and part of the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils.
Bixby Schools Superintendent Rob Miller said Byrd was suspended Tuesday after the district got a report of possible inappropriate conduct.
Miller said they immediately told law enforcement and have been cooperating with the Lighthorse Police Department on their investigation.
"If allegations of wrongdoing are verified, we will act quickly and decisively to address these issues in accordance with the Bixby Board of Education policy and Oklahoma statutes,” Miller said.
They said district leaders will release more information when it's available. Lighthorse Police said federal investigators are also looking into the case.
They said they are waiting to hear whether Byrd's case will go to federal or tribal court. They said if it ends up in tribal court, prosecutors will likely charge Byrd with video voyeurism.
Byrd was booked at the Okmulgee County Jail and has since bonded out. We've contacted Byrd for a comment but haven't heard back.
