Muscogee (Creek) Nation tribal prosecutors will pursue charges against a man accused of raping five women in the 1990s.
After Leroy Smith’s case was moved to federal court due to the change in tribal jurisdcitio from the Supreme Court ruling on McGirt v. Oklahoma, charges were dropped entirely Thursday. The federal judge said the statute of limitations had expired.
On Friday, Principal Chief David Hill announced the Muscogee (Creek) attorney general would seek charges.
Hill said their goal is “to ensure that all Oklahoma residents are protected from serial rapists like Leroy Smith.”
