Big Donation To Help Tulsa Create Nearly 60-Acre Park

The City of Tulsa is planning to open a new park, which will be the second largest in the city, thanks to a local donation.

The City had land already along Haikey Creek but couldn’t use it because it was surrounded by public property. The Chapman foundation is donating the private land that will allow the city to create an almost 60-acre park.

Parks Director Anna America said the plans for the park will come out of community meetings, but the size of it creates plenty of options for trails, water features, and possibly another dog park.

It's covered with trees now, and in addition to the creek, there's a large pond on the property. Some of the trees will have to be cleared, and new roads created for access and parking.

“Where else are you going to get access to trails and woods like this, minutes away from 71st and Memorial?” America said.

The new park will open up new connections for the Mingo Valley Bike Trail and new open space for approximately 10,000 people in the apartments nearby.

The City needs time for planning and improving the land but will have money to do the work coming in about the time the planning will be done - in as little as a year.
