A couple is urging Oklahomans to think before they get on the road during Labor Day weekend.

The couple, who have asked to remain anonymous, hopped in their car to pick up dinner but were met head-on with another vehicle.

A car driving southbound on 180th Street in Norman hit the couple’s vehicle near the intersection of 180th and Alameda on Wednesday night.

"The person had hit us dead on. On the side of the jeep," the man said. "I saw my wife and she said, ‘I am hurting. I am hurting.’”

As they quickly felt the pain of the collision, the couple realized how lucky there were to be alive.

"God has his hands on us," the man said.

The couple said the area is no stranger to accidents.

"In the last couple of years, there have been two or three deaths,” the man said. “Motorcycles have been shoved in the ditch and died there.”

The couple wants people to think before driving especially during Labor Day weekend.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, a total of 469 crashes took place with six people dying in 2019. Fifty-five crashes were alcohol, drug-related or both.

The OHSO said every wreck was preventable.

Officers across the state will work together to ramp up enforcement this weekend to keep as many drivers safe on the road as possible.
