One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a fire at a home in Bethany. Investigators believe this is a domestic violence situation.
Neighbors said what began as a normal Saturday afternoon turned chaotic.
“Smoke was too heavy,” Bethany resident Tim Jennings said. “You couldn't see inside to go into see if anybody was in there.”
Jennings lives across the street from the home where firefighters and police responded to Saturday evening. He said he heard screaming.
“Looked out the front door, saw another neighbor coming with a fire hose around the corner,” Jennings said.
Jennings and others then went across the street to help.
“We kept spraying the water, tried and couldn't get in there,” Jennings said.
According to Bethany police, two people were inside the home. Paramedics took them to a local hospital. Police said the events were confined to one room of the home.
“It seems like it's going to be some sort of domestic violence situation,” Bethany Police Department Lt. Angelo Orefice said. “We won't know more until were able to serve a search warrant and get in the residence.”
Authorities said they expect to learn more by Monday.
