As we get closer to flu season, doctors said they're getting a lot of questions about differences between the flu and COVID-19.

A Brazilian study even looked at the effectiveness of flu shots this year to prevent serious side effects of COVID. OU's Chief COVID officer said a lot of the symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu are very similar.

Dr. Dale Bratzler said while both viruses can present respiratory symptoms, COVID-19 can also present a loss of taste or smell which is unique to it. The onset of symptoms after being infected is also usually quicker for the flu than it is for the coronavirus.

Bratzler said there is some good news though about some studies taking place in the southern hemisphere.

He said there is evidence that if we follow social distancing guidelines and wear a mask like many people have been doing, the flu won't spread as easily as years past.

A new Brazilian study also found that people who got a flu shot, and then were infected with COVID-19 had less severe symptoms than those who didn't get the flu vaccine.

"I think it provides more evidence that it's important to get the influenza vaccine and there is no evidence that it increases your susceptibility or causes any problems in respect to COVID,” said Bratzler. “In fact, it may improve or reduce your likelihood of getting really sick with the disease."

That study is still pending peer review.

Dr. Bratzler said every year, hospitalizations and deaths go up during flu season, meaning it's important we lower COVID-19 cases now.
