More than a dozen volunteers with Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa and Home Depot spent hours Friday building wheelchair ramps for two families in need.

Volunteers said it felt great to use their time to make a resource possible for people who are really struggling.

Before the pandemic hit, Meals on Wheels set a goal.

"We actually had a plan to build one every month with Home Depot this year- this will actually be our third one that we are constructing in October," said Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa’s Jonathan Vanbeber.

Meals on Wheels provides more than food for people in need.

"We provide nutritious support. We provide caring contacts and wellness checks, with the goal of keeping people safe and independent in their own home," said Vanbeber.

These ramps will help families who are struggling to safely get in and out of their own homes. To make it happen, they have teamed up with volunteers at Home Depot.

"All of the volunteers that you see out here today, are volunteering their time, we don't get paid for this,” Home Depot Operations Manager Amber Bone said. “This is what we do because we love giving back to the communities that we work in."

"Working with Home Depot, we feel like their Team Depot has a good plan and we can all be safe and we can still do good work for our clients that really need help getting in and out of their houses," said Vanbeber.

In the next couple of weeks, these ramps will be delivered to families in need in Tulsa.
