The Harmony Bridge, a pedestrian area over the Arkansas River, is expected to close for several months starting on Monday. City officials said repairs and upgrades are coming to the area.
The gates to the bridge, which run along South Memorial Drive in Bixby, will be locked on Monday and stay that way until the project is complete. Crews will make structural repairs to the area and said parts of the bridge could be exposed to the river.
Among the new additions, the city officials said there will be more lighting, seating and awnings. They added that there will also be a spot for food trucks to park.
This is the second phase of upgrades to the area, however during the first phase, which included painting and fencing, there were issues with people ignoring the closure signs, according to Bixby city officials.
“Some people ignored some of the fencing and would get across and jump over the fence and the gate,” said Jennifer Rush, City of Bixby. “It’s very important that people stay off during this time.”
The project will cost the city of Bixby more than $3 million and will be funded through sales tax. Construction is expected to be complete by the summer of 2021.
