The University of Tulsa is hosting its first football game of the season at home on Friday night, and according to the team, they will be using that time to honor the victims of the Tulsa Race Massacre at the game.
TU Cornerback coach Aaron Fletcher said that he was inspired to do it after talking with current and former players about social justice issues and after being inspired by the successes of the Black business owners on Black Wall Street.
Fletcher said that during Friday's game, which is being called the "Legacy of Black Wall Street game," fans will see interviews with players, prominent TU alumni and community members about the impact that Black Wall Street and the Race Massacre had on them once they learned about it as well as how it is still impacting Tulsa today.
Coach Fletcher said the goal is to educate people about what happened and work toward solving our division.
"You got to be able to move on from just talking about something and think of yourself in the solution that could move the needle forward," said Fletcher"
According to Fletcher, the university plans on making it an annual event with a week of events leading up to it.
Fletcher said that the event is getting a lot of positive feedback and even got a shoutout from TV sports personality and Oklahoma native Skip Bayless.
