A national pet store chain is opening a location in Tulsa on Saturday despite months of criticism from local animal welfare activists.

The Oklahoma Alliance for Animals, the Humane Society of Tulsa, and Tulsa SPCA say they plan to peacefully protest for many weekends to come as they claim Petland buys puppies from backyard breeders, and that the animals don't receive proper veterinarian care.

"Instead of spending thousands of dollars to buy a dog, you know, we would love for you to adopt one," said Mindy Tiner of Tulsa SPCA.

The owner of Tulsa's Petland, Carl Swanson says their puppies come from USDA licensed breeders and distributors, hobby breeders defined by the Animal Welfare Act, and vet checked adoption pets.

"The fundamental difference between the people that want to protest our store and us is we believe Oklahoma's deserve a choice," said Swanson.

The activists started a petition against the store. They say the 'Oklahomans Against Petland' petition is just shy of its goal of 15,000 signatures.
