The Tulsa County Election Board officials have said that they are seeing record high numbers of voter registration and turnout compared to previous years.
Election Board Secretary Gwen Freeman says with this being such a historic election, it is clear that people are taking their civic duty of voting very seriously this year.
Freeman said compared to the 2016 presidential election, Tulsa County has increased the number of total registered voters in the county from almost 360,000 people up to almost 375,000 people total.
Tulsa County has also seen an 11% overall voter turnout increase, smashing all previous records by bringing that turnout total from 69% in 2016 to a projected 80% of people participating in voting this year in 2020. She said seeing participation like that is unheard of across most other counties in the country.
Freeman says processing the absentee, early, and Election Day ballots can be exhausting, with such an increase, but it is worth it.
“We are extremely excited about being part of it,” Freeman said. “You’re looking at history being made and the staff in this building don’t take that lightly, they are very committed very knowledgeable, they are working super hard to make sure every vote will count.”
Freeman said over 13,000 people have already early voted and more than 52,000 have already turned in their absentee ballot.
