A growing concern for Oklahoma schools is that districts are facing an even bigger challenge than usual to find substitute teachers.

The pandemic is forcing teachers to quarantine, raising the need for more substitutes. Many districts are offering incentives to make sure kids get a good education. District after district are already dealing with a very difficult year for education.

"It's really tough right now," said Suzanne Lair, the Jenks West Elementary school principal. She said her district is one of many having trouble filling substitute teacher jobs.

"We're all having to step in and do other roles," Lair said.

"Please, please, please, help us in trying to get substitute teachers," said Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist. Gist said only a quarter of the usual amount of substitute teachers enrolled for this year, so other TPS staff are stepping in.

Union Public Schools students in 6-12th grade recently pivoted to distance learning due a lack of substitutes and bus drivers since so many teachers were in quarantine.

Districts like Jenks and Owasso are offering substitute teachers raises in hopes of attracting new subs this year.

"Every year I get a call that this year, the need is great, and it seems every year the need is greater,” Erin Benuzzi said.

Benuzzi has been a substitute for seven years. She said it's a challenging job, but one she loves because she can make a difference.

"A lot of us aren't doing this for the paycheck, we're doing this because we love the kids," Benuzzi said.

Benuzzi will be subbing this year at Tulsa Public Schools after Thanksgiving. She urges others do to the same since the need is so great this year.

"People need you, the kids need you, the support staff needs you," Benuzzi said.

"Apply and we will welcome you with open arms," Lair said.
