U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo has been appointed to a rare third term, the Library of Congress announced Thursday.

Harjo is a Tulsa native and becomes only the second laureate to receive this extension since position terms were established in 1943. Harjo is also the nation’s first Native American poet laureate.

The Library of Congress said that Harjo intends to focus on her signature project, a digital project called “Living Nations, Living Words” during her third term.

Harjo has authored nine books of poetry as well as a memoir, a children’s book and a young adult book. She also has recently released a co-edited anthology.
