The Muskogee City Council voted 5-3 for a mask mandate Monday night. Officials also heard comments from the community after the vote no votes were changed.

“Nothing in recent times has divided the American electorate more than COVID-19. To mask or not to mask is the new question. At the end of the day we err on the side of caution because we want schools to be opened for young people to experience some sense of normalcy; we want to slow the spread so no government entity outside our self-governance of home-rule has to consider shutting down our economy; we want our healthcare workers to be safe as they risk their lives to save others from this threat. We may disagree on how to proceed but the cost of doing nothing could cost us everything in the long run and we are obligated to try something In the ongoing saga known as COVID-19,“ said Muskogee Mayor Marlon Coleman
