TPD Warns Black Friday Shoppers Of Increased Break-In, Theft Risks

Every year, Americans flood stores for some of the best holiday shopping deals on Black Friday, but Tulsa police officers say it often comes with an uptick in crimes of opportunity.

Even with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic risks, millions of people are expected to take part in Black Friday deals this year.

The Tulsa Police Department is warning shoppers that keeping shopping bags or personal items visible in their cars during this time of year could be an invitation for criminals.

TPD's Jeannie Pierce said that because of the usual higher theft and break-in rates, Tulsa officers will be under Operation Safe Shopping, meaning there will be an increase in patrols near shopping centers.

Pierce said, “if you see that the parking lot has video surveillance park near those video surveillance cameras so you know if something were to happen at least we have the video to find whoever the suspect is.”

According to Pierce, if someone does break into your car or steal something off of you, you should call 911 immediately and an officer will be with you to help within minutes.
